- COMMON PROBLEMS, QUESTION AND ANSWERS
-
- Q. How do I install the system?
- A. If you have a hard drive called C: and a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive
- called A: put the diskette marked disk 1 in the A: drive and
- Type A:INSTALL from a C>
-
- If you have a hard drive but your configuration is non-standard or
- you just prefer to install the system manually proceed as follows:
-
- 1. Copy all files from all diskettes to the hard drive.
- 2. To uncrunch the archived files Type PKXARC /R *.ARC
- 3. To load RootDirectory type ROOTDIR.
- 4. Later you may want to delete the ARC files from your hard
- disk since they are no longer needed.
-
- Q. I installed the system but some of the files seem to be missing.
- A. Try manual installation as described above. Check that you have enough
- hard disk space available (about 2MB for the full system).
-
- Q. Can I use RootDirectory on a machine without a hard drive?
- A. No.
-
- Q. When I try to access a picture I get a "topic not found" error.
- A. The graphics utility program has failed to load. Make sure you are
- starting RootDirectory with ROOTDIR and the command RUNEGA is in the
- KP.BAT batch file. If you are using several resident programs try increasing
- your DOS environment space by putting the following line in your
- CONFIG.SYS file:
-
- shell=c:\command.com /E:512 /P
-
- If you already have a shell command in config try increasing the number
- of bytes allocated.
-
- Q. My graphics is definitely loaded but nothing happens when I try to
- display a picture.
- A. Try putting the following command in your KP.BAT file just after the
- RUNEGA instruction:
-
- set _user=97
-
- Q. I'm running under Desqview and can't get the graphics to work.
- A. Use the set _user=97 command above in your batch file and also make sure
- that RootDirectory is the first program to load.
-
- Q. My pictures are blurred.
- A. Perhaps your EGA card is one of the old ones with only 64k of memory. If
- this is the case you'll need to get a new EGA card before the toolkit
- will work. Another possibility is that you are running at a higher
- resolution that 640 * 350. Remove the high-res driver from your
- config.sys file to correct this.
-
- Q. Can I run RootDirectory on my PS/2 or portable?
- A. Certainly. The system is not copy protected. You will need to move the
- files to 3 1/2 inch diskettes.
-
- Q. My Mouse won't work!
- A. If you have a mouse please install the drivers before starting
- RootDirectory if they are not automatically loaded at boot time.
-
- Q. My system locks up just after the KnowledgePro logo screen. What can
- I do to get the system working?
- A. Earlier versions of DOS sometimes cause problems if there is a mouse or
- other serial device attached but not functional at the time KnowledgePro
- first loads. The most common symptom is total lockup of the system just
- after the KnowledgePro logo screen.
-
- To correct this:
-
- 1. Load the mouse drivers or
- 2. Disconnect the mouse or other device or
- 3. Add a sigle line file named KP.PRM
- with the following single line :
-
- mouse = no.
-
- OR Remove memory resident software. RootDirectory will run under
- products like sidekick but memory shortages can occur depending
- on the knowledge base.
-
- OR Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to AUTOEXEC.OLD, reboot and try again.
- OR Rename your CONFIG.SYS file to CONFIG.OLD, reboot and try again.
- If neither of these work there is probably some conflict with a resident
- program or host communications device which is using the same interrupt
- as RootDirectory.
-
- DON'T Forget to rename your AUTOEXEC.OLD file back to AUTOEXEC.BAT and
- your CONFIG.OLD file back to CONFIG.SYS.
